Competitor Surveyor Privacy Policy
Competitor Surveyor is a free Chrome extension made by Escher Group, Perth, Western Australia. This policy explains what the extension does with information.
Last updated 8 October 2026
The short version
Your analysis stays private. Nothing the extension finds is sent to us, and everything it keeps stays on your own computer. To do its job, it reads the website you are looking at, as explained below.
What we collect
Nothing. Competitor Surveyor has no accounts, no sign in, no servers and no analytics. We do not receive any information about you, the websites you analyse, or what the extension finds. The Chrome Web Store shows us overall numbers, such as how many people have the extension installed, but never who they are.
How the extension works
Competitor Surveyor never runs on its own. It looks at a website only after you click its icon in the toolbar, or press its keyboard shortcut (Alt+Shift+S), while that website is open. After that, the buttons in its side panel can survey the same tab again. Chrome does not let the extension see any other tab or any other site, which keeps the rest of your browsing private.
When a survey starts, the extension takes a picture of the part of the page you can see, to show at the top of the report. The picture is kept only while the side panel is open. It is never saved or sent anywhere.
It then reads the page you have open to see which marketing tools and features the website uses: things like the scripts and services it loads, its links, headings and buttons, how its forms are set up (never what is typed into them), the names of its cookies (never what is in them) and how quickly it loads. This includes the account numbers of tools such as Google Analytics, which the extension uses to recognise them and does not show in the report.
It also requests up to nine more pages of the same website, the website's sitemap and, for an online store, the store's public list of products. Your browser makes these requests itself, so to the website they look like any other visit from you: they carry the details your browser always sends, including your cookies for that website when it requests its pages. The extension adds nothing about you. Those pages are read, not run, so they do not set off the website's own analytics.
All of the reading and all of the analysis happens inside your browser, on your computer.
Links to the ad libraries
Reports contain links to the public ad libraries run by Google, Meta and LinkedIn, so you can see the ads a business is running. These are ordinary links that open in a new tab. So that each one opens on the right business, the link includes that business's website address (Google), its Facebook page number or its name (Meta), or its name (LinkedIn), including a name you have typed in yourself.
Those platforms receive that information only if you click the link, just as if you had searched for the business on their website yourself. The extension does not read those pages.
What is stored on your computer
Everything the extension keeps is stored by Chrome on your own computer, in the extension's own storage. It is never synced, uploaded or sent anywhere. Specifically:
- Your own website, if you choose to save it, so competitors can be compared with it: what the extension read from your website, including the address of the page you surveyed. Remove it at any time with "Forget my site".
- Up to three competitors, so they can be compared side by side. Each competitor you survey is saved automatically while there is room: what the extension read from its website, the business name if you changed it, the address of its icon, and the date. Remove any of them at any time from the competitor comparison.
- The report you last chose to print, so the print page can show it. It is replaced the next time you print a report.
- How far you are through the first steps, so they are not shown again.
The extension reads a website as your browser shows it to you. If you were signed in to that website, what it keeps may include what you could see while signed in.
"Start over" removes everything above at once. Everything is also removed when you uninstall the extension. The extension does not save pictures of pages.
Printing and copying
Printing opens a page made on your computer and uses Chrome's own print window. Nothing is sent anywhere.
For support, double clicking the privacy line at the foot of the side panel copies the technical details behind the report you are looking at to your clipboard, including any account numbers it found. Nothing is copied unless you do this, and the extension never reads your clipboard.
What websites can see
A website you survey could notice the extension, because its extra page, sitemap and product list requests show up in the website's own records.
The side panel shows each website's small icon. Your browser loads it from wherever that website keeps it, the same way it does for a browser tab.
Links to our websites
Reports contain links to Escher Group and to Blueprint. If you click one, the address includes a tag that tells our website you came from the extension. It does not say who you are, which websites you analysed, or what was found. Our websites have their own privacy policies.
Permissions the extension asks Chrome for
- activeTab: lets the extension read a page, and take a picture of it, only after you click its icon or press its shortcut on that page.
- scripting: used to read that page, and to request other pages of the same website, after you start a survey.
- storage: used to keep your own website, up to three competitors, the report you are printing and your place in the first steps on your computer, as described above.
- sidePanel: used to show the report beside the website.
The extension asks for no access to websites in general, and includes no code from anywhere other than the extension package itself.
Chrome Web Store User Data Policy
The use of information by Competitor Surveyor, including what it reads from websites, adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. It is used only for the features described in this policy.
Children
The extension is a business tool and is not directed at children. Since it collects no information, it collects none from anyone.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be published at this address with a new date. The extension's listing on the Chrome Web Store links here.
